Organic hydroponics at school: 650 plants for over 1,000 students

After the project on the terrace of FAO in Rome, H4O arrived in Uganda. In Kampala, at St. Kizito High School, in collaboration with the FAO Mountain Partnership, we built an organic hydroponic system of 650 plants, designed for over 1,000 students.

With the FAO Mountain Partnership

H4O has been a member of the Mountain Partnership since 2024: the United Nations alliance for sustainable mountain development, with its secretariat at FAO. The St. Kizito High School project was born in collaboration with the Mountain Partnership.

Two goals: learning and feeding the school

Education. A dedicated course was created for the students. They learn to grow without soil, to use little water and natural nutrients, and to look after the system day by day.

The canteen. The vegetables help the school meet the needs of its canteen for all students. Over a year this means major savings, and fresh, healthy food on the plate every day.

Built together with the students

We assembled structures, growing channels and vertical towers working side by side with the students. They did the first transplants themselves: today the system is part of school life.
