Organic hydroponics at FAO Rome: fresh, zero-mile vegetables on the terrace
In 2024 H4O carried out a pioneering organic hydroponic project at FAO headquarters in Rome. FAO is a central institution in the global fight against hunger and for sustainable development. The system stands in the heart of the Italian capital, near the historic Baths of Caracalla. It shows how even central urban spaces can host advanced zero-mile hydroponic growing. The initiative is part of H4O’s mission to bring organic hydroponics to strategic urban settings. Our aim is to promote a sustainable farming model that can be repeated and suits every city in the world.
A sustainable system, built in wood

The system installed at FAO in Rome was designed with a structure almost entirely in food-grade treated wood, cutting the use of plastic by about 90% compared with traditional hydroponic systems. This choice is a practical step towards eco-friendly organic hydroponic systems. The project comes from H4O’s wish to create a repeatable model of sustainable urban farming. It fits perfectly in institutional, school and community settings, and is a fine example of synergy between farming technology and green architecture.
🥬 50 plants in 1.2 m²: maximum efficiency

In a very small space of just 1.2 m² (200×60 cm), the FAO Rome organic hydroponic system holds 50 plants. Lettuces, herbs and leafy vegetables, with a view over Rome. Thanks to a modular, vertical design, each month the system produces an average of 3-5 crates of fresh vegetables, in a continuous, sustainable cycle. This installation is a first in FAO’s history: for the first time in 75 years it brought self-produced, zero-mile vegetables into its staff canteen. A result that confirms the value of the H4O model for food challenges, even in high-profile institutions.
🌍 A green revolution in the city
This work shows that urban organic hydroponics can contribute to food security, even in the smallest spaces.
It’s a repeatable model for schools, apartment buildings, companies and institutions.
Since 2024 H4O has also been a member of the FAO Mountain Partnership, with which it carried out the project at St. Kizito High School in Kampala, Uganda.

🌱 The future? It grows in the city, without soil
FAO Rome organic hydroponics is more than a system: it’s practical proof of how to grow healthy, zero-mile vegetables, even in institutional settings.
